Steve Jobs – Book Summary

In the news published today (August 30, 2011), it was written that Steve Jobs, who had pancreatic cancer, had 3 months to live. This statement from his doctors upset not only the world of informatics, but also everyone who has heard of Apple in some way.

Steve Jobs, the founder and CEO of the $340 billion Apple company (who recently left this post), left a tremendous success story behind him. The book titled “The incredible story of the creator of a giant brand: Steve Jobs” published in 2009 makes this story reach everyone.

Excerpts from the book:

  • He was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco.
  • He had a rebellious personality. A friend from school said: “When he lost a race, he would go and cry alone. He couldn’t get along with others. He wasn’t a normal kid.”
  • He was passionate. He had an extensive knowledge of the subject he was interested in. One acquaintance said: “Trying to have a conversation with Steve Jobs is like trying to drink water from a fire hose.”
  • “Driven by the passion of his ideas, Jobs did not understand why something could be impossible.”
  • In the 1970s, Apple placed its first advertisement in Playboy magazine.
  • Two important characteristics of Jobs stood out: his “passion for excellence” and “impatientness”. He couldn’t understand why everything he wanted was taking so long.
  • She had a child with Chris-Ann, an Apple employee, but she long denied it.
  • Jobs first saw the basic features of the computer, such as the graphical interface and mouse, in XEROX, and they began to use these technologies in the computers they produced.

Book continues:

  • Maciontosh is the name of Jobs’ favorite type of apple.
  • Apple is known for its effective advertisements. While 10% of the American people knew about Apple at the beginning of 1981, it increased to 80% by the end of the year thanks to effective advertisements.
  • Steve Jobs thought anyone working less than 80 hours a week was lazy.
  • Steve Jobs offered a job to an executive at Pepsi. When he got a negative response, he said: “Are you going to continue selling sugar water for the rest of your life when you could do something really important?”
  • He couldn’t really understand the software. Programming that came too easily to some was a dark enigma to Steve.
  • Steve Jobs dropped out of college in his sophomore year.
  • Steve Jobs is known as the only person fired from his own company.
  • Jobs: “Often people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
  • Jobs changed the music industry with the iPod and the movie industry with Pixar.
  • Besides Apple, Jobs is also the founder of NeXT and Pixar.
